Thank You Note Etiquette

Why should we bother with this old tradition?

Having good thank you note etiquette is one of the kindest and most gracious ways of making someone feel appreciated. It was, and it still is, a great opportunity to demonstrate our elegance and manners.

A personal thank you letter shows you have noticed the efforts made and you are showing your respect for this. As a well mannered lady you will be very aware of ensuring that anyone who has demonstrated generosity towards you is appreciated with your flawless thank you note etiquette.

Sending a personal thank you letter ensures there is no room for misunderstanding and it should guarantee you future invites to other social gatherings!

When should you send one?

Some may feel that writing a note only needs to be sent after a special event, but having good thank you note etiquette means sending one after any occasion that has involved someone putting effort into ensuring your enjoyment.

Indeed, a personal thank you letter can be sent after any act of generosity that you have been lucky to be the recipient of; although a written note after a cup of tea may be a little over the top!

Once you have mastered your thank you note etiquette it shouldn’t take more than a couple of minutes to write the thank you letter, although it should always be thoughtful and appropriate.

How soon should you send it?

As soon as possible but definitely no more than 48 hours after the event.

Who should you address it to?

If you have been hosted by several people for example, a group of friends threw a party for you, it is good thank you note etiquette to send a letter to each person/couple.

If the host was a large group or organisation then just write to the Organiser and ask them to share the note.

If you have been hosted by a family you should address it to the couple and then mention the children by name within the content of the note.

Dinner Party Thank You

Dear Jane,

I just wanted to write a quick note to thank you again for the lovely dinner you arranged for my birthday. It was truly a wonderful night out and so special to celebrate with dear friends. We are truly blessed to live in a great community with so many wonderful people. I feel very lucky to have met you and look forward to many more fun times together.

Thanks again for everything.

With love,

Dear Frank and Liz,

Thank you so much for hosting such a lovely party. It's always so nice to see you both, and it was fun to visit you and with so many of our friends. And of course, I'm always impressed with the amazing food you serve. The butternut squash ravioli is truly the best I've ever had!

I hope you enjoy this holiday season and I hope we'll see each other more often in the New Year.

All the best,

Gift Thank You

Dear John,

The flowers are gorgeous! I've never received flowers at the office before and it was quite a treat! I felt like a princess. Thank you so much for sending them, and for choosing such a beautiful bouquet. You really made my day!

Dear David,

Thank you so much for the lovely book! I have it out on our coffee table and everyone stops to browse through it. It's fascinating, and would you believe the cover design even matches our decor? It's perfect in every way.

Thank you again for thinking of me!

Much love,

Money Thank You

Dear Bill and Amy,

Thank you so much for your wedding gift. We're going to deposit it in an account to save for a deposit for a new home. It's exciting to know we're that much closer to our goal, thanks to you!

It was wonderful to see you at the wedding. Thanks for coming, and thanks again for your thoughtfulness.

Dear Mr. Jones,

Thank you so much for the generous gift. It will certainly help with my college bills, which is a big relief. I may even treat Gina and myself to dinner this weekend. Thank you from us both!

Hospitality Thank You

Dear Richard and Sue,

I just wanted to write a note to thank you again for the wonderful visit we had with you. You are a fantastic guide and it was so nice of you to have taken us out for a tour of the area. The scenery was beautiful.

The dinner was outstanding Sue, and thank you Richard for all of the help around the house. We hope that you enjoy your visits as much as we appreciate them. They really mean a lot to us!

With love,

Dear Mark and Jane,

Thank you so much for the wonderful visit at your house. We always have a great time whenever we're with you - we just wish we saw you more often.

Thank you so much for the lovely meals you made for us. John loved the rack of lamb, and of course I'm always a fan of the zucchini quiche. I'm always inspired whenever I'm with you because you have the amazing ability to create such lovely meals with ease. The rhubarb crumble was incredible as were the lattes.

We hope to see you more often in the new year.

Warm Regards,
